Travel Documents
- Visas/Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA):
- Kenya: Most foreign visitors need to apply for an eTA online before travel. You should apply at least three days in advance, though it’s recommended to do it a couple of weeks before your trip.
- Uganda: Most foreign nationals must obtain an e-visa online before their trip.
- East Africa Tourist Visa: If you plan on visiting both countries (as well as Rwanda), you can apply for a single East Africa Tourist Visa, which is valid for 90 days and allows multiple entries between the three nations.
- Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure and have at least two blank pages for stamps.
Health and Safety
- Vaccinations: Consult with a travel doctor or clinic well in advance. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into both countries. Other recommended vaccines often include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Polio.
- Malaria: Malaria is a risk in some areas. Talk to your doctor about anti-malarial medication and use insect repellent.
- Insect Protection: In addition to antimalarials, bring plenty of insect repellent with DEET, and consider packing long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against mosquito bites, especially at dawn and dusk.
- First-Aid Kit: Pack a basic kit with pain relievers, bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any personal prescription medications.
What to Pack
- Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying clothing in neutral colors for safaris. Layers are key, as temperatures can vary significantly from cool mornings and evenings to hot afternoons. A light jacket or sweater is a must.
- Footwear: Bring comfortable, sturdy walking or hiking shoes for safaris and treks, as well as a pair of sandals or lighter shoes.
- Essentials: Don’t forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses for sun protection. A power adapter (Type G, a three-pronged plug) is also essential for electronics.
- Gear: Binoculars are a must for wildlife viewing. A camera with extra batteries and memory cards will also be invaluable.
Customs and Currency
- Declaration: Be prepared to declare currency and monetary instruments exceeding a certain amount (typically $10,000 USD or equivalent) upon arrival.
- Prohibited Items: Be aware of customs regulations regarding prohibited items, which can include certain firearms, explosives, and some agricultural products.
- Currency: The local currencies are the Kenyan Shilling (KES) and the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but it’s wise to carry some local currency for smaller purchases and tips.
